24th September 11 - 22nd October 11
Aakash Nihalani

Seven Art Limited is pleased to present Aalign, a solo exhibition of new works by the New York-based artist Aakash Nihalani.  For his first exhibition in India, Nihalani continues his practice of creating site-specific installations in the city streets with brightly colored tape and whimsical cardboard props, extending this visual language of line and color into gallery works such as photos, video and sculpture.  Nihalani’s works are both sophisticated and playful, creating illusions of space and materiality with the essential element of the line, rendering abstract geometric patterns and forms which play with architecture, space and volume. Engaging various media, Nihalani’s works breach the disciplines of art, design and street art and have been shown in public spaces, galleries, boutiques and on album covers, thus questioning the border between high and low art forms.

For Aalign, Nihalani will present photos of tape works he has composed in the urban terrain of Delhi, several new sculptures in laser cut steel, carved sculptures in wood, a digital print on canvas and an interactive work which is shown on a tablet where the audience can interact with the geometry of the work. He also added a new technique for his first solo in India; new patterns he has conceived for embroidery on silk.

Aakash Nihalani was born in 1986 in Queens, New York to Sindhi parents. After initially studying political science at New York University, he switched to the fine arts in which he completed his B.A. in 2008. He has been featured in numerous publications including the New York Times, the TOI and Vogue and has held solo exhibitions at Bose Pacia New York and Carmichael Gallery, Los Angeles, among others. His work has also been seen in shops, offices and private residences.
